Design Information
1. SIze:
In the previous post, I set the possible size according to the year of Yue Fei's great event.
The possible sizes are 328cm* 228cm, 333cm*234cm, 334cm*234cm, 335cm*235cm, 335cm*236.cm
The hight of the memorial is 1103+1142=2245cm
2. Shape:
I will use Yue Fei's weapon as a reference for the monument's shape.
Yue Fei was a general in the Song Dynasty, and I have no pictures of what weapons he used. It's only from some Chinese accounts that the spear was a weapon he used.
According to The Essentials of the Military Arts, this is some spears, one of the commonly used weapons in the Song Dynasty.
(This is a Chinese book.)
This is spears illustration from that book. |
Those colour are from former cases.
I decided to use the black one that is black granite. It also reflects the respect and solemnity of the ancestors.

This kind of stone black with the red: the red expression of Yue Fei's enthusiasm for ideals.
Design Process & Making
1. Sketchbook: the preliminary idea
2. Software: Sketchup, to weigh size and make model- I think that the memorial is too thin.
- I used Sketchup's zoom function to manually adjust the scale to see which proportions looked good.
- I identified that the height stays the same, but it will look better if they are doubled.
- Then, I tweaked the bottom rectangle to make it look different on the sides than on the front.
- Long spears of the Song Dynasty had serrated blades under the head to increase their aggressiveness. I decided to use the bottom of the memorial to make a flower bed larger than the main part, which makes it always green, quiet and peaceful.

Some good process here with technical detail - we discussed in class - try to add a little more technical detail as there seems to be part of the design journey missing
