Research of Memorial

It is said that a man dies three times. The first time biologically, the second time at a funeral when relatives and friends say goodbye to him, and the third time when everyone forgets him.
Constructing a memorial to Yue Fei means that no matter how many years have passed, people will still admire him. For more inspirations, I searched for some memorials.

(This link is a Chinese website)
The memorial was built to commemorate a martyr of the China 1911 Revolution.
It is located in the back hill of Yue Fei Temple in Qixia Ridge, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China.

Surrounded by stone benches and trees, the monument looks peaceful and peaceful.
The front of the monument bears the names of the martyrs.

The back of the monument is engraved with the deeds of martyrs.

The main part of the monument is a rhombic cyan stone, narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, with a triangular, cone-shaped stone of the same material at the top.
The main body of the tablet, the top stone and the base form a monument shaped like a sword, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the martyrs.

Inspiration:
I plan to put the monument to Yue Fei on a mountain in his hometown. Surrounded by trees, it looks very quiet.

Research 2:  Wright Brothers monument

Designer: Robert T. Rodgers and Alfred E. Poor, New York, Architect.
This monument is to the Wright brothers, who invented the aeroplane, in the Wright Brothers Memorial National Park. It is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at Kill Devil Hills. The park address is 1000 N. Croatan Hwy., Kill Devil Hills, NC, the USA.
Front
'The Wright Brothers National Memorial is a 60-foot pylon, styled after those used for aeroplane races, constructed of grey granite blocks. It honours Wilbur and Orville Wright and marks the site of the glider flights that preceded their first powered flight. '(docsouth.unc.edu, n.d.)
The metal light on top of the Wright Brothers Monument, once used as a navigational light, is no longer in use at the back but was retained when it was renovated in 2008.
The monument is made up of stone and metal. I think this is interesting because designers could have chosen to use all stone or all metal.

Inspirations:
1. Yue Fei was a general. A common decoration for a Chinese general is a helmet and armour. It occurred to me that whether the monument could make a cap with metal on the top or metal edge on the main body of the monument.
2. I may use Yue Fei's weapons as a reference for the shape of the monument because his weapons must have been Yue Fei's longest company in his military career.

Designer: Advaita Gadanayak, Indian sculptor.
The police memorial has been built in New Delhi, India. It is 'located at the culminating point of prestigious Shanti Path in elite Diplomatic Enclave of Chanakyapuri' (India Architecture News, 2019).
The memorial is to commemorate the death of many Indian police officers.
'The first and foremost is the memorial itself which is in the form of a 30-foot tall sculpture. It is carved out of a single monolithic black granite rock weighing 238 tonnes. ' (India Architecture News, 2019)

The irregular turquoise-hued shell and the black concave part expresses the design's respect for martyrs.

Inspiration:
I might make Yue Fei's memorial out of black stone because grey and black stones can express respect for martyrs, heroes and sacrifices.

  1. You have some research here but you need to critically discuss in your own word these monuments and how they inform your designs - you need full references added!
